Scope and interpretation
Use this illustrative protocol to understand the publishing pattern. It is not a validated scientific method.
A record describes one observation at one place and time. Comparisons require compatible methods and conditions.
Required fields
| Field | Format | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| record_id | Stable text identifier | Connect revisions to the original observation |
| observed_at | ISO 8601 timestamp with offset | Identify the observation time |
| site | Location reference | Identify the observation point |
| conditions | Plain text | Record tide, weather, and limitations |
Example record
{
"record_id": "north-001",
"observed_at": "2026-10-28T09:00:00-04:00",
"site": "North transect",
"conditions": "Illustrative record; no real measurement"
}
Corrections and provenance
Keep the original timestamp and record the reason for a correction. A changed method requires a new protocol version, not a silent alteration to an old result.
